Tiff obviously has a fixation on being the woman in her father’s life. Kind of like a gender-reversed Oedipus complex. Her having an absentee mother likely facilitated that – or else she’d have been accustomed to her dad having a partner.
That kind of thing can foster unconsciously caused difficulties in relating to opposite-sex partners. Both Tiff and Gunther have that problem, as well as that kind of parental situation.
Biting into a jelly doughnut is so much easier than sorting painful stuff out. Maybe Gunther should take a giant step forward like, “Tiff, we’re 19. We need to start checking out the real world. Maybe we can help each other.”
Has to be Ann Eiffel. So to expiate her issues a conflict with Ann might ensue? I don’t know if that is what is working up to, anything is possible on Luann, but I have my possibilities here. An Ann, TIffany throw-down? That should be interesting, but Tiffany has a better soul, but she is more vulnerable as well. Ann is a sociopathic type character.
For Tiff – It seems like pleasing Dad was always easier than learning to get along with others in the real world. The eating and the anger now are a distraction from the changes Tiff needs to make. Gunther should talk Tiff into going on a hike and then a good movie (no snacks).
@Vilyehm: Does the name WizardGoat refer to any cartoon character created by a certain Icelandic cartoonist who once lived in Tucson?
Nope. About 15 years ago I made it up as my handle on a web forum. Since then I’ve used it on a few other forums, including this one.
The “Wizard” part is because I’m into metaphysical studies, and “goat” is because my Sun sign is Capricorn.
In recent years I Googled it, and found that a small number of unrelated others have used it, in some context, as well. But I didn’t copy anyone when I coined it, and may well have been the first to use it.
@MOOSE: If Tiffany is shown yelling at her father the way Gunther yelled at his mother about Mr. Gray/Grey, I for one would be as disgusted with Tiffany as I have been with Gunther. But I can’t recall ever seeing Tiffany have a conversation with Daddy Dearest, so that will probably not happen…
Every child who has an only parent develop a new relationship goes through the thought process of possibly losing his/her inheritance. Tiff’s new persona is definitely a way off the charts over reaction – especially since there has been no indication from her dad that he is serious about his new girlfriend or that she is a gold digger who will succeed in cutting off Tiff. A good pre-nup requirement at the appropriate time would flush Ms. new in dad’s life’s true motive (if any). Somebody (Gunther!!!) has to tell her to chill out and not ruin her own life over something that she has no control over.
Tiffany is just reacting to losing her Father’s undivided attention, on top of her other social problems. Her Dad’s girlfriend ( people using the word “Mistress” are being overtly judgemental ) will prove to be a very nice person.
Psych 101 – Tiff was abandoned by her mother at a very young age, her father was the one constant in her life, and now she sees him as abandoning her – no surprise that she fiercely resents the intruder.
Ooooh! Jelly donuts! Will you let me have just one, Tiff?
So, you’re afraid dear old daddy will cut you out of the expected inheritance in favor of this -tramp, ehh? Wait until you, and we, find out who she is. My money is still on Annie Eiffel the Awful Evil Eyeful….
Tiff…here’s some free legal advice, go see a lawyer, it happens all the time; new spouse, old man passes away, guess what? the first set of kids are written out of Dad’s will and get nothing. Oh, and get over your Daddy issues, find a boyfriend. Try living as an independent adult.
How many here have at some point in life deeply cared about someone else, and tried so very hard to be ourselves cared for just as much? ALL OF US, RIGHT? Heck, i can even remember turning down a proposal in something like 1976 despite loving him because when asked it hit me like a brick that we BOTH needed to be in a relationship with better emotional equality.
In that situation a person can move on, and for me that worked out just right, but a kid whose efforts never satisfy a parent can not move on so easily. It is a deep wound.
Throwing money at offspring, or pretending that a few weeks of attention each year will suffice is negligent and cruel.
If I were more certain of my own recollection of the Tiffany/Dad situation, I’d be raising a spirited defense of her. As I often say, someone out there can certainly confirm or disconfirm my memories. But it’s been my impression that Tiffany NEVER had her father’s undivided attention. Isn’t it the case that he barely communicates with her except for these summer ritual get-togethers? And that money and material things are his stab at paternal love? And doesn’t she realize this is the case? But if that’s all he has ever given her, withdrawing that is equal to withdrawing everything that even resembles fatherly love. If he’d been caring and nurturing and concerned in other ways, she might be thinking, “Well, he deserves happiness too.” But if she is experiencing this as the complete loss of the last vestiges oh his love? I’d see her present reaction as understandable, forgivable. If he’s really never been there for her except financially, she probably needs to reconcile herself to the possibility, maybe the probability, that he may never change. She may have to prepare herself to seek validation that she is lovable and loved elsewhere. She may need to learn to love and care for herself.
Ewww! Who uses HANKERCHIEFS anymore? Blow your nose, return to pocket, save for later. GROSS. As for Miss Piggy—boo hoo, spoiled brat! “I have competition for Daddy!” Sooooo sad!!!!!!
1) Tiffany’s comments of “tramp… …makes him happy just like that” and “…she’s after his money” both to me speak of a level of distrust Tiffany has in her Dad and not so much the woman she has never met. I am still of the mindset that Tiffany’s rich father must be somewhat of a “player” and has serially dated a variety of women over the years.
2) I still find it interesting that Tiffany has taken to binge eating as her method to cope with stress here. I would tend to believe that the stress eating coping mechanism would have manifested itself far earlier than at 19 years of age. Now, you may say this is the first time Tiffany has had that kind of stress…. but, realistically, with Tiffany from a family background where I believe the mother and father are separated by divorce [please correct me if I am wrong], there were bound to be some stressors during that separation/divorce period that would have been at least similarly stressful in Tiffany’s life.
3) Probably due to the nature of some papers still publishing Luann in B&W, I find it interesting that the “jelly” from the donut is solid black. When I first glanced at the comic, I presumed it was a chocolate cream filled donut due to the black color. It was not until I noticed “Jelly Donuts” on the side of the box did I realize it was jelly.
4) A lot of folks keep saying Tiffany is behaving like Gunther has of late. On one level, yes… they both are having parent issues. But, I think Tiffany is handling hers vastly differently…. she is not being perpetually angry or bellowing like Gunther has done in group settings. She is talking about it in an animated way with Gunther (and also binge eating).
we really don’t know anything about Tiffany’s father though many have concluded that he is a womanizer, with a lot of $, and that Tiffany has been left to fend for herself emotionally though she has been well provided for materially. Based on Tiff’s anger here, I will guess that she has been ’daddy’s girl’ all along in a single parent household, and that daddy (just like Mrs. Berger) has found a mate to share his life with. Tiffany perhaps never had to compete for her father’s attention. But now she needs to . All these insults hurled at someone she’s never met perhaps are just a way of expressing frustration (floozy, tramp, witch). Gunther had a lot of anger in him on discovering that his mom was dating. We witnessed that anger for a long time. He was a mama’s boy maybe like tiffany has been daddy’s girl. I could be wrong but I see Tiffany going through the same growth process as Gunther.
Tiffany wasn’t doing that well with her peers. However If Tiff had kept her cheerleader appearance – she certainly could have become a trophy wife for some older dude. Good that Tiff has to sort it out now. I think she’s actually too intelligent to be happy with life as a TW.
My sympathy for Tiff, has dropped from 9.3 to 2.8. Gunther could continue to rise, if he kept his therapy cap on , and asked, “What would it feel like if you let go of your father’s dating choices, and focused on your own interests?” Or “Do you think you have any power to change your father’s behavior or feelings?”
What the World Needs Now is for Tiffany to make a sharp right turn: “Enough about ME – What about YOU, Gunther?” Gunther would go, “Er – Uh” – and Tiff could just plant a nice long kiss on him. Gunther’s eyes would open up big… THEN – We could jump to another arc for a while. Maybe to return later to Tiff & Gunther appearing to be on a date.
Well, if the mystery woman is Ann Eiffel, it won’t be long before Tiffie’s papa is singing Billy Joel:
She is frequently kind And she’s suddenly cruelShe can do as she pleasesShe’s nobody’s foolBut she can’t be convictedShe’s earned her degreeAnd the most she will doIs throw shadows at youBut she’s always a woman to me
I would like a timeline explanation from the Evanses. What happened to Ann Eiffel’s party? Is that going to be told in flashbacks? So, in 6-8 weeks (real time? Luannverse time?) Tiffany gained that much weight without being noticed? NO ONE wondered where she was? Stretching plausibility.

Hey Tiffany? Remember when You said to Gunther:
(060917) “He (Mr. Gray/Grey) makes Your Mom Happy. Shouldn’t She Enjoy some Romance?”
(061017) “Stop being a Grump and Let Your Mom be Happy!”
(061217) “You’d have fun too, if You eased up on …….,”
Well why not apply all that Stuff You said, to Your Dad and His “New” Girlfriend??

Women – including Tiff – are somewhat more likely than men to refer to another woman as a “tramp”. That’s because the jealousy factor is added in.

Yesterday’s grey dot explained.
Tiffany has a two day plewd.
Wiki:
plewd (plural plewds)
A stylized drawing of a drop of liquid, as used in cartoons, especially comic strips.
&
Now add just one little plewd coming off the head and, poof, that’s one nervous little guy
So change guy to girl and we have a very nervous Tiffany.
But the plewd yesterday wasn’t very clear.
The more emotional Tiff gets, the flatter the bottom of her eyes.

S.Dog I think you had a comment with a desire to see more Tiffany back story. I can’t find it. I had replied:
At birth, when slapped by the doctor, Tiffany winked back.
At six months, she was the only baby to crawl with swaying hips.
