I don’t know about John’s school district, but here in South Delaware, they start the Tuesday after labor day. Maria started last week, so here she’s dreading her second week.

That IS the first time I’ve heard any good reason why schools seem to start ever earlier in the year.

Not being a fan of any sports, I would never have imagined, (my 4 kids did gymnastics and wrestling) but that’s true. At least MOST schools here in AZ have decent air conditioning, but it’s still better for families to have extended time for vacations and/or for the kids to have summer activities. I’ll be enjoying my pool through October, but back in IL (where I and mine grew up) swimming is done for the year.

Things got so bad here in Alabama with early start dates that the state passed a law last year mandating an August 20 start date. Educators moan about about “summer learning loss” but it never seemed to affect us in the good old days. Regardless of when a particular district chose to start school, football teams were regulated on when they could start practice so a school couldn’t get an advantage.

We seem to believe that somewhere along the generations we developed more fragile, easily damaged kids. Sure, I went back to school every Fall just as dumb as a post. I didn’t know nuthin’ after all that time off and had to start from scratch.

It’s also been said, and I’ve heard it many times, that people shouldn’t study for prolonged periods without breaks. You’re likely to forget a lot by trying to get too much in in one session. So learning needs to be divided into chunks as well.
