Pacific University was hosting a debate on foreign policy and I went to deliver cartoon coverage. Former U.N. ambassador John Bolton squared off against former Indiana congressman Lee Hamilton. Matt: Two men at podiums...great for comics! 11-7-07 Portland, OR It's always assuring to hear things like: John Bolton: We should not let DIPLOMACY become the objective! Actual size of 'stache Lee Hamilton thought we could actually AVOID another war with the right kind of leadership. Lee Hamilton: Blah, blah, wonk...measured approach...open talks... The notorious testy Bolton got on a roll when a panel started asking them pointed questions. Any concerns about private mercenaries running rampant in Iraq? John Bolton: Our forefathers knew what privatization was about LONG before we did. Is it OK for foreign governments to capture U.S. soldiers and brutally torture them? John Bolton: It would be IMPRUDENT but it would NOT be illegal. Equal opportunity torturer! Towards the end, Hamilton was asked how America was able to squander its goodwill around the world. Lee Hamilton: Uh...I think it's pretty obvious.
