When I first encountered the game battleship, both sides would make their own grids on graph paper and play with those. Then someone came up with a fancy version they could sell. Of course, it doesn’t waste as much paper.
When I was much younger, I wrote two computer programs to play games that were popular back then, “Battleship”, and “Robot War”. The Robot War one was more fun. Your player starts in a random part of a grid and there are some “Robots”, each of which also starts in a random spot. There are also numerous big “Rocks” scattered about. Each time you move, the robots all move toward you by one grid point. The object is to get all the robots to vector into the rocks and blow up.

Whatever happened to “sank”? Also flang, sprang, stang, drank, shrank, slank, and stank?

Seems like a shallow reason to break the fourth wall.

Tough to lose a battleship-pencil sharpener, I guess. Or what kind of ship did it stand for, Monty?
I hate it when gaming pieces are lost….
