Good morning, Villagers. I’ve ascertained that most of the GoComics readers are of a certain age. I wonder how we all got into the comics?
As for me: At some point, I guess when I first learned how to read aroind 1st grade, I was attracted to the color of the Sunday comics. My household job was to dry the dishes for a nickel a day. On Sunday, with 35 cents in my pocket, I would walk the 2 blocks to the candy store (in those days kids could walk by themselves) and buy the Journal American – I don’t know why it was the Journal American. I was only interested in the comics – not the black and white newsprint.
One day my parents told me I couldn’t buy the Journal American anymore (this was about 1945 or 6). I couldn’t understand why, with my own earned money, I couldn’t buy that paper. Only years later, upon reflection, I guess it was because that paper was anti-Semitic. I didn’t know what anti-Semitism was – I don’t even think I knew I was Jewish.
One bad effect of the the comics: It introduced me to stereotyping: someone with an ugly expression on his face was a bad person; the nagging wife (Maggie and Jigs), the bad mother-in-law (while my own father LOC+VED his mother-in-law), the idea that wives loved to spend their husbands; hard-earned money (at that time few wives worked)..
