That’s a pretty sweet deal even with normal child sized hands.

Pretty sure it has to be a human hand, sweetie. Also, am I the only one to hate jelly beans?

It must have been wild before Stop Signs were standardized.

She pulled a street sign out of the ground with her bare hands. Is she Nancy or Pippi Longstocking?

What the heck is a “stop street”? I know these strips are old, but this apparently pre-dates the introduction of the octagonal red stop sign.

If the hand means “stop”, then why do you need the stop sign?

If you can see the stop sign, why do you need the hand?

Octagonal stop signs (albeit originally being yellow) have been standard in the United States since 1922. It looks like that this wild melange of signage was created specifically for this gag.

I was wondering about this sign. I have never seen such a sign before. Here are a few that are “close” to what Ernie drew:

None of the above are super close to what Ernie drew… so I keep thinking he may have made this up just for the joke.

Little Audrey politely declined the grocer’s invitation to help herself to a handful of cherries, but gratefully accepted the handful he gave her. He had bigger hands.

Even if you take the store sign the way it was meant, that ain’t sanitary.

These days that white hand meaning stop is within the fimbralated octagon to mean “stop” without words.
