The waiter’s left ear in panel one looks like a handwritten lower-case “a”.
In panels two, three, & four, the waiter’s left ear looks like a handwritten upper case “E”.
The entire encounter appears to me to be taking place telepathically because the mouth of the waiter never moves.
Of course, the waiter could also be a ventriloquist on his days off.
When I grow up, I want to be able to think of everything, just like Ernie Bushmiller did.
