And fair enough too. Otherwise you don’t have a robot competition, you have a remote control car competition. Robot Wars has the same problem (or had).
Sounds easy enough. They have already got self driving cars and a self driving rover on the planet Mars. All Nancy and the kids have to do is reduce that technology down to the size of a matchbox.
I feel like there’s a visual gag in the last panel with the teacher holding the car that I’m just not seeing. Wait, no one else is seeing it, are they? >:^o
easy solution. Sluggo reveals himself to be a big Speed Racer fan. They add power jacks or buzz saws to the car and it only has to drive in a straight line from entrance to exit. I bet there’s no rule specifically against it. Go, Slug Racer, Go!

The mixed blessing of self-driving cars, should they become feasible:
1. If a traveler, alone, dies of a heart attack, the car won’t go out of control and hit other cars.
But…
2. That car that just parked in the space next to you? A dead passenger.

Nancy doesn’t need to imagine the face of a jealous onlooker, she can just take a selfie.

As Poochie is the brains of the operation, Poochie and the Obedience School will win this competition, hands down.

If it can’t steer itself it’s not a robot. Robots are autonomous by definition.
