I am fully invested in this story, and I will undoubtedly be disappointed when it’s not continued tomorrow.

Her sentence is a brief variation on many similar sentences from various authors since at least 1830. It is often held up as the worst opening sentence of any published novel… though in the 20th century it has been somewhat redeemed by such writers as Madeleine L’Engle and Snoopy.

This version is probably the worst of the worst….

It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents—except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness.

It was a dark and stormy night … and … SNAP! [Oh darn I broke the point off my lead pencil … and no pencil sharpener in sight!]

And no modern electronic word processor in sight either … a horror writer’s … worst NIGHTMARE!

Be afraid, Lucy. Be very afraid. In panel 3, Agnes has a look in her eyes that indicates she may be contemplating poking you in the eye with her pencil, if you utter another word.
