So we are back to the Mildred and Nancy arc as I hoped we would be. Today’s strip confirms that Mildred has been far more successful in helping Nancy to get smarter than she meant to be.
The message in panel 2 makes me think, with the election coming up, whoever is going to be the winner, Trump or Biden, the win sure is going to make them unhappy and miserable!
I was an early fan of Olivia Jaimes’s Nancy strips. I felt it was a renaissance for the comic strip icon. I used to print out strips from Go Comics at work and pin them in my cubicle. At one point I had strips from across an entire year decorating my workspace. I say all this to denote how much of a fan I was.
These new strips aren’t good. They haven’t been good for a long time. They may as well be prose, and not particularly funny or witty prose either. Four panels of thought bubbles taking up a quarter up to a full half of the panel do not an engaging comic strip make. Ernie Bushmiller’s Nancy strips had a great visual whimsy and Jaimes’s strips – despite being different stylistically – continued in that great tradition! What happened???
I used to follow several accounts on Twitter that would repost the daily strips. No one does anymore. Olivia has killed this comic’s momentum with her seemingly phoned in, dialogue-heavy strips that focus on secondary or tertiary original characters as opposed to the beloved core cast of Nancy, Sluggo, and Fritzi. It’s a far cry from her best work only a few years ago, and I’m sad to see how far it’s fallen.

You can work in school or trade favors for homework and jobs until you are successful and rich.

Mildred is the most tragic character in Nancy, which is surprising given Sluggo is nominally a homeless child.

The mere fact that Nancy exists throws Mildred’s life into a deep crisis.
