I bought a used textbook for my managerial accounting class. []I had purchased used textbooks – and even “international editions” for a few years without issue, and so didn’t see what would be so bad about getting this one used.[]Not this time.[]The professor wanted all assignments done via a third-party site known as “Homework Manager” which was maintained by the publisher; why he didn’t use the Blackboard system the college had in place was anyone’s guess.[]Well, what he failed to explain to anyone (I was taking the class via correspondence) was that we needed new books because each new book would have an insert with the details for how to properly register for Homework Manager and how to access the assignments picked by each professor. []I didn’t know about this, and so didn’t know that my used book lacked the insert. So cue me spending $95 for access to something that I couldn’t fully use.[]By the time I managed to convince the prof that yes, I was having problems with Homework Manager, I’d already missed the first test. []Thankfully, my advisor was as unimpressed by the prof’s handling of matters as I was and made quite a bit of noise. I was able to get transferred into a class taught by a prof who actually communicated with people, but the damage was done and “needing to be transferred” set off a chain of events that nearly kept me from finishing my MBA.
