I was taken as a guest to a local franchise of a national coffee brand yesterday. The young woman behind the counter asked me what I’d like. I told her, “a small plain coffee please.” She turned and looked at the menu board, turned around and asked me to repeat what I wanted. I again said, a small, plain coffee. She said, “I don’t think we have that here Let me get my shift leader.” She got the shift leader who asked me, “Sir, what is it you want?” I repeated that I wanted a small plain coffee. The shift leader told the young woman, Ask him if he wants the Pike’s Peak or the Blonde. She dutifully did so and I ordered the Pike’s Peak.
The young woman got my small cup of coffee, looked me dead in the eye and asked me, “What would you like in it? We have all these flavors.” I told her I didn’t want anything in it, just the coffee. She then held it out to me and said “It’s hot, do you want me to put anything in it?” I again told her I did not want anything in the coffee, I would just like the coffee. She seemingly reluctantly to believe I didn’t want any additives in the cup.
My friend was struggling mightily to contain his laughter and I was struggling to maintain my composure because what should have been a 2 minute process took probably 10 or 15. Just for a plain cup of coffee…Sigh.
