When you realize that so many republicans are against better education, you can see why they don’t want people studying science and technology. We might get better vaccines and cleaner energy production. We can’t have that …
It is a small step but an important one. Of course, what is necessary is also impossible in the current climate. That’s because what is necessary is tuition-free public university. We need it as an investment in society. Those countries that have it are thriving.
That’s what happens when you turn colleges into ‘for profit’ businesses. The profits just keep going up, but nobody is claiming that the quality of education is going up.
It seems the only advanced education the right appreciates is that which can be directly applied to weapons making. Their third world view — with a two-tier society of entitled wealthy and unentitled poor — has little respect for equality and democracy.
In my own case, the college tuition at the college I attended has increased 25 fold (not adjusted for inflation) since I graduated. To be fair, that school has become a university (that is with several colleges and post-graduate degrees, and their has been a substantial enlargement of the facilities), and the enrollment is much larger. Presently, 99% of the student body receives — requires — some form of financial aid.
And oil companies largely don’t pay taxes and get millions in subsidies, that are intended to keep the price of fuel low, I don’t get. Seems they aren’t working to keep fuel prices low either.
I’m all in helping working people, even if it’s not a direct benefit to myself.
Most all european countries off free education for their children to become not only better citizens but scholars, physicians, scientists which is beneficial to the good of the country. Unlike the U.S. which wants only to make a profit from teaching…nothing else. That’s why we are so far behind the rest of the civilized world. We only copy…never invent.

Is it ultimately enough? No. Is it more of a start than has been made before? Yes. Celebrate it for what it is, a step in the right direction!

It is less expensive for my twin daughters to attend Oxford than to travel across the Bay to UC Berkeley when we lived in San Francisco.

Colleges aren’t going poor, but the students trying to pay for college are.
