The problem is that people have normalized the (conventional) damage done by fossil fuel. They see it as normal and acceptable. Any damage or downside to new energy sources is viewed as an adder, and they don’t subtract the damage not done by the unburnt fossil fuel.
And all of that is before factoring in the slow global warming effects.

They’re short-sighted. As the polar oceans warm, the ice clathrates will break down and release tons of methane. It’s worse than CO2 in some respects.
