Probably, now, that should be “the Unknown Several-boneshead”. Nothing like a cracked cranium, and lots of guts, too! No glory, no pity.

The most frequent last words I have heard on cockpit voice-recorder tapes are, ‘Oh .shit,’ said with about that much emotion. There’s no panic, no scream, it’s a sort of resignation: we’ve done everything we can, I can’t think of anything else to do and this is it.

Wiley Miller, ladies and gentlemen: such a jackass that even the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier isn’t beyond his grasp.

Usually I like Miller’s sarcasm, but today makes me angry. I know he’s probably not meaning to call our soldiers boneheads, but it’s not too much of a stretch either.

Should’ve left this one in the drawer, Wiley.

jhned, I believe it is a stretch, because people like the individual in this tomb don’t live long enough to become known for anything beyond their darwin worthy departure from this world.

@jhned, that’s not the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier–unless you know of one in the “Last Words Cemetery.”

No wreath, no flags, no honor guard.

jhned, the only way that could reference the military is if you consider soldiers to be boneheads. I’m in a military family and know that is not the case, either inside the military or out. So Wiley’s joke is wonderfully funny and does not contain the reference or connection you thought of.

JHNED - You are out of your mind if you think this strip is a slap at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, or the military.

I’ve often read with amazement some of the comments from Right-wing readers and their loopy accusations of Wiley, but, jhned, your comments are above and beyond anything I’ve read here before.

Switch to decaf before commenting again. And then step away from the keyboard.

    The cartoon is great!

    NightShade09 and spyderred, thank you.

I also see no connection to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in this cartoon, and I am sensitive to such things. JHNED is way off base.

It is only one of a number of such fateful and common utterances. I think of Chet Baker who famously called out “Watch Daddy!” before diving into shallow water and almost breaking his neck. Same sort of thing. Leave it to the military mind to associate such foolishness with courage.
