Noah’s “ark” and Moses’ “basket” in the Nile are the same Hebrew word.

That’s Moses for you, after 40 years in the desert who wouldn’t want to do a little diving and go for a swim?

Not knowing anything about Hebrew, I have a further question. If the Hebrew word for Ark in “Noah’s Ark “ and for “Basket” in story about the basket Mosses’ mother put him in are the same, what about the Hebrew word for Ark in “Ark of the Covenant”? Are all three the same word? If so, maybe Indiana Jones was really looking for Mosses’ floating crib?

The Hebrew word for Noah’s vessel and Moses’ basket are the same. The Hebrew word for the device in which both the broken pieces of the first set of Tablets and the set of second tablets were contained is different. I don’t know how the English translations came about.

Moses! I want you to build me an Ark! 300 cubits by 50 cubits by 30 cubits!Right! What’s a cubit?Let’s see, I used to know what a cubit was. Never mind, Moses! Just build it!Right! Now how am I going to get an ark across a desert for forty years? You think you’ve got troubles? I have to get on top of that dang mountain when you’re done!Slightly reworded version of Bill Cosby’s routine.

I thought this was hilarious. For the people not getting it: the strip is juxtaposing the story of Moses parting the Red Sea with the story of Noah’s Ark for humor purposes. The idea is that Moses wouldn’t have waited the forty days and nights and beyond for the raining and flooding to stop, because he could part water and make his own dry land.

Yes, which is why it’s very interesting that the city of Jerusalem is not only considered vital to three religions (whose people have to survive in a region of scarce water), but that the city itself survived all these years. Most cities that lack access to a vital resource don’t last very long…

I like Wiley’s idea of an ark better than God’s even though I doubt if Wiley even exists.

I am sure that there is a water source in Jerusalem, just not a large enough source for the current population. Water is necessary for any population source to start

Addressing various comments: Moses was not punished for breaking the first set of Tablets. There are two separated instances narrated in which Moses is directed to bring water from a rock. In the first, shortly after leaving Egypt (Exodus 17), he is directed to strike the rock. In the second, 40 years later (Numbers 20), he is directed to speak to the rock, but instead strikes it twice. Verse 12 explains the reason for his punishment. Scripture holds leaders to higher standards, seemingly the opposite of what we expect from leadership today.

God must have a sense of humor. Why else does She allow so many morons on the highways? Entertainment.

Different people were able to do different things, by God’s will of course….Noah was a builder who was good at multiplication….2 by 2….Moses was…..um……Moses was ….oh I give up!

Actually, nobody parted anything. Moses didn’t cross the Red sea. He actually crossed the Reed Sea, which was a marshland.

Of course God has a sense of humor. Compare the elephant and the giraffe. And then there’s the duck-billed platypus.
