Regardless what tax law says; corporations are not people…If they were; they would be required to die after 70-85 years and re-organize under new names and new boards of directors… starting out with a clean slate and new stock issues, new union contracts and new statements of intent. The old stocks would become worthless at the termination of the old company. Everyone dies and so should corporations. To give birth to new endeavors to grow and succeed or fail on their own as Real People do.

Nobody claims that corporations are people. Corporations are associations of people. To quote the majority opinion in Citizens United, “If the First Amendment has any force, it prohibits Congress from fining or jailing citizens, or associations of citizens, for simply engaging in political speech.”

Your willingness to publicize your ‘moment’ indicates you are a person of character . . . amusing character, at that.

Corporations are collectives of people, just like governments, cities, universities or any other uplifting and enriching collective. The very word “incorporated” denotes a collective.Like any collective, they set policies and practices within their collective dominion, according to the wishes and beliefs of those members of their collective who hold authority. You can easily hire a corporation to take out your garbage, cut your lawn, clean your gutters or anything else. It’s still cheaper to do it yourself, though.

What ticks me off is the corps want to be able to give money for elections..Then want to jump ship to other countries to ‘pay less taxes because the U.S. is too high.’.My take is if they move the HQ to another country to skip out on taxes, that is the same as becoming a citizen of another country. So they give up their citizenship to the U.S..Thus they are a foreign organization and should not be allow to put money into the election or groups of the same nature..The political organizations much be made to list their donors. Otherwise how would we know it it isn’t backed by terrorist or other governments trying to do damage to the U.S.

Here’s an idea. Just saying.Let’s change the election campaign law as follows:1) Only the candidates them selves can advertise their positions and views.(this does away with the overly biased rhetoric from unions, PAC’s, etc.)2) Contributions can only be accepted from PEOPLE who have an SSN. NO CONTRIBUTIONS FROM EIN’S!

When my daughter was trying to find a job (this was back in the Bush era) we went into Hobby Lobby to get an application. I didn’t know of their overzealousness yet. With a mother like me there was no way she was getting a job there. Plus I taught both of my girls to be open-minded and to speak said minds. Believe me when I say there are many days I regret that one! lol. Every so often a full page ad for religion will appear in our paper. I noticed at the bottom scripture and “brought to you by Hobby Lobby”. I had decided a while back to never go there again. All of this birth-control crap has cemented my disdain for the company.

They’re not talking about corps as a ‘group of people’ here. They’re talking about them as individuals, with individual rights, but none of the responsibilities or the ability to go to jail for crimes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corporate_personhood explains it all better than I can.

Here’s my problem with the “corporations are people” nonsense. The people within the corporation already have their power as citizens. But now, because they’re organized as a corporation, they have added power. This essentially doubles the political influence of the people in charge of a corporation.

Well, he could try to hire the corporation, which the US law now says are people, not “is a person”, but it’ll cost a lot more than she thinks.

Back when I was in business school (long time ago), it was taught as a given that corporations are, legally, like a person. That was not considered controversial. Somewhere in the intervening years we forgot to educate people in our schools.

I’ll believe that “Corporations are People” when one joins the Military, takes up a rifle, and volunteers to get shipped to a combat zone.

AKHenderson: Personhood is irrelevant to the case. The outrage is that they declared bribery to be protected speech..doublejake: Corporations own more churches than they do governments – especially “megachurches”. After all, there are only a couple hundred countries, but more than that denominations (especially including “nondenominational” denominations)..Reynard61: They do – as long as they don’t get shot at and are only there to collect the money off the dead bodies of formerly real people.

I asked a female employee at our local Hobby Lobby how she felt about what the Court had ruled. She looked up a the security camera and quickly walked away. …….-Stay tuned; we’re not done with Hobby Lobby yet. (appeals, lawsuits, boycotts, girlcotts, etc.) We don’t have HL in the LA westside area, thank Goddess. But I’m tempted to browse at one wearing all my arcane, pagan insignia. Prob’ly won’t matter to the help, but what the hell !!

@ Hippogriff: No; I’m not talking about companies like Halliburton/KBR that (supposedly) “service” U.S. troops, or mercenary organizations like Blackwater that “protect” high-value “clients” for huge $$$. I’m talking about a corporation where EVERYONE from the Chairman-of-the-Board down would actually join the Army and risk actually dying for their country. When that happens, then I’ll be willing to believe that “Corporations are People”.

Reynard61: Nor was I talking about those vulture capitalists exclusively. I would agree with you except we both know that is totally hypothetical. No corporation would ever do such a thing. Even back when the wealthy would raise and equip a regiment, the rich guy wouldn’t risk himself or first son (the one who had the primogenitor) joining, although the second son (traditionally bought a military commission) might be regimental colonel..Jeff1159: Reminds me of the time in the early ’50s listening in (it was that loud) on a complaint by a woman who thought the student union sounded communist. The school chaplain asked her if she were a Republican and she proudly admitted it. You mean like the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics? Sputters before hanging up and all us United States students could stop repressing our laughter.
