Frankly, I don’t give a fig for the jobs of people who rip me off, charge extra for my shaving kit, treat me as if I’m a dangerous psychopath, herd me down a chute like cattle, strap me into a chair that is too small to comfortably seat an eight year old, and then subject me to a ride not unlike a third world bus ride, only less pleasant. And they act like they are doing you a huge favor.

Shoe fetish is right. Back in the early days after 9/11, I was once pulled aside for “extra screening.” The guy had literally ZERO interest in the cell phone, camera, Sony Discman or water bottle in the backpack I was carrying on the plane. But he sure was fascinated by my smelly old sneakers.

Joe’s comment about the economy reflects a common misunderstanding. New technologies, especially sudden technological breakthroughs, generally expand economies, not depress them. Railways replaced long-distance travel and transport, The former, mainly stagecoaches, were not missed. The general opinion was “good riddance.”

The automobile wiped out a giant economic force, horse transport and its huge support base, from breeding stables to inns and livery stables. Millions of jobs in America, highly-skilled and professional down to casual labor, were wiped out almost overnight. Tens of millions of jobs replaced them. The economy exploded with wealth creation and new jobs as society came to grips with cars. Beam transport would do the same.

One problem with this idea. . . . . . If it is like a star trek transporter then anyone who has one could go anywhere and do anything. There would be no security and nothing and no one would be safe. Any such transporter would never be released for public use. . . . . . . If it needs two terminals then what’s to stop a group smuggling a terminal in pieces to make a clandestine one? The you would need TSA like security around each terminal and constant sweeps for illegal ones.

Last time I flew I stood in line longer to get on the flight than I was in the air. I think it’s time to bring back the dirigible airship. I recall reading about a dirigible pilot who was asked why he preferred dirigibles over regular air planes. He was preparing to land his ship at the time. He thought about it, said Wait and I’ll demonstrate" then left the helm walked back, poured himself a cup of coffee, took a long look back out over the landing area while sipping from his cup, when back in and landed the ship. Asked the reporter, “Did you get that?”

It will make Capitalism on the premise of “Working for a living” insustainable. Capitalism will have to reform to “Work for Luxury” or Capitalist nations become 3rd world as over 60% the workforce will lose their jobs and have no replacement. Of the lucky 40%, half of them (i.e. 20% of the whole) will earn incomes substantially lower than the Cost of Living. That equates to a poverty rate of 80%.
