In my experience racsm/ prejudgism is a primal urge. Often in a lower socio-economic class it is reinforced by competition for available jobs. We saw this in every mass imagration surge in the last couple centuries, Jewish, Italian, Irish, Chinese and after emancepation.. All came competing for the manuel / low skilled labor adding pressure to those “americans” who were trying to survive / move up. Even skilled jobs had much of the same effects (think the garment district). A lot of the tension between the hispanics and blacks ( yes i know it’s offensive, but so is every other label , and we need to define the term) comes down to jobs, living space, and respect. All people are basically tribal. We befriend people like us, what we don’t relize is that most people are like us. We share the same basic desires, and the same basic fears. Our culture, our upbringing varies dramatically on what is acceptable to affect the desired outcome. Diversity is a good thing, but it is not a goal, it is rather a introduction of new blood into the melting pot. America is essentially an Idea, a shared value system wherein we can all find a place to fit in. Peacefully?
