Yeah, back in the day a punch in the nose was way more common. Face to face people are way more tolerant. Anonymity breeds animosity, aggression and acrimony. Just be nice.
@enter.name.here: the medium doesn’t matter. Human nature has the ability to display both its best and worst attributes. The one that rises to the surface most often is that which finds the most supporters. Doesn’t take much guessing to decide which has prevailed in recent years.
Polite. That depended on the color of your skin, your sex, your sexual orientation, your religion, etc. Not everyone was treated so politely. I understand the historical perspective and all, but I also acknowledge that many people were treated much less fairly than they are today.
Sorry, I am the truth-in-history-no-fun person today.
A bore ruins parties and can be escorted from the premesis. A Net Nutter is a coward hiding behind a computer and needs placed in an institution, but we cannot find the twit.
4 possible outcomes for a duel:The first two have one mortally wounded party. The third has both parties mortally wounded. The fourth has the arbiter convincing both parties to go the pub, shake hands, and behave like gentlemen. An Iraqi government minister widely suggested a duel between Saddam Hussein and Bush 2nd. Tens of thousands of lives would have been spared.
OLDPINE: I hear that the Jews in 1930’s Germany were very polite. As were the Cambodians under Pol Pot and the Estonians under the Soviets. Now as to arming both sides – there are those of us in the world that see forced implied threat of death and/or physical harm a sign of the failure of CIVILIZATION. Those of you that feel that need to hang your six shooter or “whatever” shooter on your belt in order to “guarantee” politeness have been dealt a bad hand. Violence begets violence. Your name “OLDPINE” would suggest you’ve been around for a while – start shootin’ and say good by – the younger and faster will disabuse you of your position. If you don’t think that is a just argument – Why have humans established laws – social norms(manners) and governments( such a dirty word)? BECAUSE SHOOTING IT OUT – ENDS BADLY FOR ALL.
As to Internet/today’s media: Roy Rogers, Lone Ranger, and Gene Autry of the 50’s TV shows carried two guns, and most often made arrests/stopped bad guys, WITH FIST FIGHTS! Good guys using guns was rare (just like in the real “old west”) But today’s TV shows start with massive gunfights, tons of dead bad guys killed behind walls with automatic weapons, while “good guys” stand in the open, never get hit, and take out guys with rifles, with pistols. Massive firepower fired rapidly, like in grade schools and universities, is the normal today. Even cops with semi-auto weapons fire many rounds instead of accuracy, which was required back in the day of six shooters, real training, and the ethic of using deadly force, ONLY WHEN A LAST RESORT.
In Nam we had “free fire zones” where everyone was assumed an enemy. Much like the streets of LA, Miami, open carry states, and yes, even Chicago where guns are brought in from OUTSIDE the area, “free fire” is encouraged by our social media, as well as our declining respect for morality, and human life. AS we destroy the planet’s life forms, and functioning systems, “humanity” is also being flushed down the toilet bowl of life.
Y’know, you cannot duel with that Russian bot, or even with the totally annoying person whose profile gives you no clue where they are, what they look like or even if they’re a dog. Your only recourse is to either SHOUT LOUDER, or grit your teeth and hit the “next” button. And there’s very little downside to the shouting option (except a waste of time: Don’t feed the trolls)

If you are lucky, you’ll be talked out of the duel which leads to politeness.

If the dueling was with swords, then a pointed reply was a real conversation stopper.

Public executions at Tyburn in London went on until 1865. By historical coincidence, the English stopped the hangings when we abolished slavery.
