I sit on our porch and read while watching the world wander by. We live on a cul de sac, so pretty often I get to watch that part of the world wander back the other way. Reading is a lot more enjoyable than watching even a blank TV… though that’s better than most of what is on…
Daytime TV is especially bad, and they repeat the same channels over and over as one scrolls through them. Gunsmoke re-runs are the best thing on… Bad part is my wife has the fool thing on all day, even when she’s out doing yard work. Always the same two channels…
Our 3rd-floor is a rooftop terrace and that’s where our real-life entertainment center is. We sit in comfortable chairs and watch the goings-on in our barrio. Never a dull moment and the view overlooking our part of the city, the mountains in the distance, and the sunsets are better than anything on the idiot box.
Traditionally, this has been the “shut-in” channel. You don’t need a fancy setup like this one; a window will do. That’s how those big windows came to be called “picture windows”.
I’m enjoying the new Perry Mason series. Dark, complex, a nearly broken man fighting against venal corruption. I find watching my neighbors much less interesting.
I don’t watch TV, either, but my wife has it on all day, and half the night. I don’t watch with her, because she watches the same trash all the time. Well, she also watches the new a lot, but I can’t watch it with her because she talks all over it. I can watch an occasional game show with her, and enjoy them, but they get old in a hurry. I’d rather be here, reading comics and comments.

This is really old-school. To change the channel, he not only has to get up, he has to fetch another neighbor.

The two favorite buttons on remote have a very specific function:
There’s the Billy Mayes memorial button labeled “Mute” – it comes in handy during political campaign season.
Then there is the one that tunes in my favorite network – OFF.

Makes me think of “The Burb’s” movie where Corey Feldman’s character got his daily entertainment from just watching the neighbor’s antics.

I like real life TV unless it has “house wives” or “Jersey” in it.
