[Pedantically yours]: There is a school of anthropological psychology that posits that (ever sustaining) mytho-magical-wishful-religio-superstitious thinking naturally evolved with the growth of self-consciousness. The cave paintings were projected “prayers” for a beneficial outcome before a dangerous undertaking. (Thusly, members of the hunting party and their blood-tie bands constituted the original audience.)

The “target audience” is the entity that gets “circulated”. There is no way to circulate a cave wall.

Seeing as how there is a stick figure under the back foot of the elephant, an outcome certainly not hoped for, this mural must be a recording of an actual event rather than a prayer for a hopeful outcome.
