I find that the crying child or barking dog in the background adds some “character” to the meetings.
Some team members are taking the time before the meeting to turn on the camera and introduce us to their children and pets.
Mostly people don’t turn on their cameras since the screen is showing a presentation of some sort. However, our group recently had team interviews with some candidates we are considering hiring. It’s nice to see the different backgrounds and gives some insight into their non-work lives. For example, one of my co-workers is a musician, based on the instruments in the background.
My background looks very professional, I have airplane pictures on the wall and a bookcase with airplane models and some other memorabilia. It’s probably the only view of the room that looks that neat.
