This reminds me of a British TV sitcom. An old married couple had to stay overnight in Calais because the ferry had been delayed by bad weather. They found a small B and B presided over by a formidable French widow. She spoke very little English and was sure that they were not married. Eventually they managed to convince her, with the assistance of their passport, that they were married. Then she was very helpful and allowed them to share the only room together. :) However, the only town clock was right outside the window and bonged very loudly on the hour, every hour. Perhaps this is the same clock and same establishment. :)
