I agree with jhouck - but there’s also a fake-presentation mask that some people wear that’s purely psychological. On Avis’s face we can certainly see the difference between her automatic smug grin and her spontaneous startled grimace. (I think the Mom is not startled as much as like “Hm, what could it be this time…” - and if she is startled, it’s as much at Avis as at Ruthie!)
Wouldn’t the facelift type have the money and inclination to live her days among less “ordinary” people than this neighborhood offers?
