That sounds more like positive reinforcement than discouraging it!

Ruthie mom should not reward for bad behaivor. Place I worked at ages ago did this but with 25¢ for each word. There at times was stress. They would feed 25¢ then let fly words.

We did that at work too Kab. Everytime someone said a cuss word they had to put a quarter in a jar. We were all guilty of it, so I guess we all contributed to the “kitty”. We finally used the money for a pizza party at lunch!

On the other hand the cash could be donated to a favourite charity!

I think family’s do that so the adults will not curse in front of the children. Not that they encourage their kids to use bad words.

As a former professor called it, theological vocabulary outside of a theological context.

My aunt, her 2 sisters and her mother tried this out on my uncle (he’s almost 95 now and still cussing). It didn’t take him long to let fly. When they told him he owed the jar a dime (this was in the 40s) he worked himself up to $5.00 swearing he never said the first cuss word. That’s when they gave up the idea.

When my kids were young I never used acual obscenities in their father’s language or mine (used things like “sugar” or “rayos”) – only started swearing once I was driving, and they were teens before then.
