In a forest setting, it’s more likely flys and beetles doing the primary decomposing work.
In my neck of the woods, we call vultures The City Road Crew. They do a much better job of cleanup and a lot faster than our paid employees.
Grandpa, tell Joe turkey buzzards or vultures is what eats dead animals.
What about the flies?
