When my wife was a teen, she’d complain about her hips being too big. I would tell her “good breeding stock.” I was right, because she’s a great mom to our 4 kids!
We should all recognize that in the time of Ruben, being overweight was a sign of wealth since they never had to worry about food. So it was natural to incorporate that into the shape associated with the ideal beauty.
These days thin is in, purely from the perception that it’s healthier. That has resulted in some taking that to the extreme, not based on health, but on the current illusion of the ideal shape of beauty.
i thought the same thing. what were the chances that the word RUBENESQUE would be used in 2 different comics on the same day! we all learned a new word for the day.

Beauty should not be defined by size or weight but too much around the middle is bad for the heart.

I had to look up what “rubenesque” means.
(of a woman’s figure) plump but shapely; curvaceous.
No, Mrs. Joker, you are not rubenesque.

Fat joke about a woman? This trope is from 1954, and it’s lazy to retread old, tired jokes like that. Boring!!!!!

Bizarre coincidence that this strip follows “Arlo and Janis” in my feed and they both used the rare word rubenesque today!
