I used to own a plane and often took my sons for rides. When the oldest was about 7 or 8 years old we arranged for him to fly to visit his grandfather, as an unaccompanied minor. When we were ready to commit to it we told him about the trip, that he would be traveling by himself this time, and was he ok with that. He thought about it for a while and then said “I want to go, but I’m not sure if I can land it”.
I was thrilled with a small stream running through my back yard many moons ago when we bought our first house… then realized how much work it was to weed by it and keep it nice!
I was watching a movie with a three year old once, and she asked about one of the cartoon characters: “Where’s her mommy?” I said, “She’s a grown up. She doesn’t live with her mommy anymore.” The look of horror on that poor little girl’s face broke my heart! (I hugged and told her she had lots of time to grow up and live with Mommy who will always love her.)
