something I always wondered, if you don’t know how to spell or pronounce a word and all you have is the paper version of a dictionary how can you look it up?(back in the 50s our local A&P grocery was selling a few pages of a dictionary every week. the whole thing was over a foot thick with 1600 pages of small type)my mother-a former school teacher-always told me to ‘look it up’ whenever I asked her how to spell

This brought back a great memory. My grandmother had an Oxford English Dictionary that was used that way.
