A rare gem indeed, but for us not in the know, how did the coloring process work? Was it done later by the publisher or did the artist somehow convey the desired hues?

An artist could supply a colored photostat as a guide, or the publisher could have their employees handle it.

I saw Robert Crumb give a talk where he showed examples of the coloring from covers of various 40s–50s kid comics. He rhapsodized over the anonymous craftsmen who put such subtle shades and gradations into the generally unrewarding work.
