Verne: They hibernate...to beat the cold, they slow their metabolisms.... verne: ...they take a long winter's nap, living off the fat stores in their bodies. hammy: why don't we hibernate? verne: We used to. years ago...before.. hammy: before what? verne: Before "downton abbey." tv: hark! vagrant! bear: does a dowager countess beat four of a kind?
bears don’t hibernate, their metabolic rates and body temps stay constant. they just sleep. years ago a biologist spent the winter crawling into caves and dens with a stethoscope and a rectal thermometer to prove it.
