I remember back in those days having more than one little illustrated book about the Three Little Kittens who lost their mittens. That old tale seems to have vanished. It took only 35 years to lose so much of childhood’s oral culture—ring games, rhymes, stories. The only things that survive are clapping games, it seems. It’s been so long since I’ve seen little girls jumping rope and reciting the rhymes that go with it. I feel old.
