when DID those chirping devices on crosswalks for the visually impaired first come into being anyway? (the crosswalks nearest my apartment complex as well as the nearby grocery store at which I work literally speak… more likely have a pre-recording)
For the benefit of the chronologically impaired: Certain models of previous generations of traffic signals had a bell that rang and a flag that changed from “STOP” to “GO”. These may be seen in operation in various old movies, cartoons et cetera.
We still have Belisha Beacons in the UK, these relied on traffic stopping when you started crossing the road, you can guess why they are disappearing fast.
My hometown had a street light that was the only one like it I’d ever seen. It was on the corner of Main & Temple. It looked like a “Walk/Don’t walk” sign, but said, “Left Turn/No Left Turn” instead. Sometimes Temple Street was a one-way; when it was, the “No Left Turn” was lit. I remember this because we LIVED on Temple Street, and whenever it said “No Left Turn” my mother would have to make a detour so we could go home. I have trouble with right & left (yes, even at 55 years old) and that old sign is how I remember the difference. Oh, and that sign is long gone now.
I bet Charlie Brown is one of those Doofus’ who yell turn the T.V. LOUDER!….I CAN’T SEE WHAT IS GOING ON, when watching a Football Game….Personally, I turn the sound OFF completely…I have heard it over and over many times…Ask the wives in the kitchen….…
Firstly, it is not a sign, it’s a light. And you have to look at the light to see what colour it is, unless you are colour blind, which Charlie Brown likely is…
