This showed up again a few years later, also an exchange between the same pair. Lucy goes into more detail: “When you cut them, they lose all their flavor.”
They also taste better cut corner-to-corner than if cut top to bottom.
In recent years I started learning about Japanese cooking. I noticed they cut almost everything on an angle: vegetables, fish etc. I tried making 2 batches of the same thing, one angle-cut and one just chopped, and there was a noticeable difference in flavour. Why this should be I have no idea.
In many of these early strips Charley Brown and Lucy seem to be brother and sister, yet they aren’t because her last name is van Pelt and she and Linus live separate from Charley. So, why is he in her house so much all the time, or is she in his house????
Bread and butter sandwich. Why not, used to enjoy mayo sandwiches as a little kid myself. Just mayo on two slices of bread with maybe a little salt for seasoning. I really thought they were fantastic.

Oddly enough, she’s right. They DO taste better folded over, for some reason. So do peanut-butter sandwiches!

At least he wasn’t cutting it from corner to corner.

In the book “Happiness Is A Warm Puppy,” one of the entries is, “Happiness is a bread and butter sandwich folded over.”

Maybe I just remember wrong, but I seem to recall this strip ending with Lucy saying “If you cut them all the flavor falls out”.

My dad used to fold over his sandwiches (also pronounced “sammiches”); he called them “Dagwoods”.

I seem to remember one of these where Lucy insists CB cut off the crusts.
In “ Breaking Bad” I thought it strange when Walter White is shown cutting the crust off his own sandwiches. How old are you, anyway, Walter?

How did this Lucy evolve into the self-absorbed bully of the later strips?

Now and then my mother would spread butter (or margarine) on a slice of white bread and then sprinkle sugar on it. Ooo that was delicious!

It should be; “Bread Butter and Cinnamon”
