Ah, OK. I was thinking I heard they were something else in “Night Court”, but that turned out to be “sweetbread”, not “sweetmeat”.

I had to look it up, “Sweetmeats” is another word for candy or other confections!

Been a while since I’ve had fudge, a well-known sweetmeat. The fudge shops have yet to reopen.

Although I know the TERMS, “sweetbreads” and “sweetmeats”, I have never heard anyone call meat or candy by these words. I’ve only stumbled across the words in books.

I’ve only heard the term used in the Monty Python sketch as John Cleese of the police hygiene squad protests that a candy’s name is “an inadequate description of the sweetmeat!”

I wonder how people got the joke back in 1950-whatever, when they didn’t have the internet to look it up and had to rely on what they actually knew.

I love it! Sweetmeats is another name for candy. It is any sweet delicacy of the confectionery or candy kind, as candied fruit, sugar-covered nuts, sugarplums, bonbons, or balls or sticks of candy

He was. Another term for candy is sweetmeat. The thymus is a sweetbread.
