I have personal rules for scary masks on Halloween. I like to dress up to hand out candy, and that includes wearing scary masks. I DON’T take off the mask unless it’s for little kids (except in one extremely pathetic instance). Their simply too you and Halloween is just about the candy for them, not scares. If their too scared to get the candy because I look like a terrifying monster I’ll take off the costume (as much as I can without truely stripping in front of kids as well as freezing on an icy Halloween night) and show them it’s just a person in a costume. That I’m not as frightening as the costume makes me appear. Have had plenty of parents thank me for doing that for their kids.
The older kids are after the candy, but their also looking for possible scares. And in most cases where I have managed to scare them once they get over their initial screams of fear and realize what just happened they start laughing at themselves and each other. Only once did I have an older kid who I had to treat like a five year old or younger. A group of girls, maybe 12 to 14 years old, came by and most of them were the typcal older kids at getting a scare. Only one of them acted like she oughta be a toddler or first grader at most. And I had to remove my mask and gloves to show her I was human. Both her friends and I thought it ridiculous how she needed to be treated with such kid gloves at that age.

It’s supposed to be effective against tiger attacks, too. I think Calvin tried that once.
