Yes, it’s slightly pear-shaped. Precision measurements of the earth’s gravitational field by Vanguard 1 showed that the earth was indeed very slightly elongated at the northern hemisphere and bulgier and flatter at the southern hemisphere. The satellite was launched in 1958, during the International Geophysical Year, and I suppose the results came out in the news just before this cartoon was published.
