Peppermint Patty sits at her desk asleep. She sits up and asks,"Yes, Ma'am? You want me to work out the problem at the board?"<BR><BR> She looks at the sum on the board, which is '4, 678 x 52'. She says,"Well, let's see, we have these numbers here, don't we?"<BR><BR> She looks to her right and says,"These are nice numbers, Ma'am..."<BR><BR> She says,"A four, a six, a seven, an eight, a five, and a two." She smiles and says,"Oh, yes, and we also have an X...."<BR><BR> She ponders,"Well, the problem seems to be to try to find out what this X is doing among all these numbers...."<BR><BR> She continues,"Is he an outsider? Was he invited to join the group? It's an interesting question...."<BR><BR> She continues,"Let's find out what the rest of the class thinks...you there, in the third row....what do you think about this ? Speak up!"<BR><BR> She turns to her right and says,"Ma'am?" She slumps at her desk and exclaims,"Rats, three more minutes and the bell would ave rung!"<BR><BR>

VERY CUTE way, Peppermint Patty, to figure out a math problem-in the case of multiplication, anyway, by making it seem like a letter of the alphabet(in this case,X) can perhaps be considered an equal, in a group of numbers. That was Peppermint Patty for you, she SURE knew how to slyly get out of doing any kind of schoolwork.

But if Peppermint Patty could have carried it onward for those three extra minutes she would have been scott free ’til the next day.
