Define “near”. I went for a walk the other day, and a bunch of arctic terns started attacking me. I was at least 20 or 30 (65-97 feet) meters away from their nests and wasn’t even heading in their direction. Arctic terns are MEAN!
for couple of years in the spring a couple of cardinals set up a nest in the rose bush besides my front door. If my wife and I went out that way they would fly off in a flutter of wings. We learned to use the garage for a few weeks so they could raise their young.
The crows seem to enjoy setting up their nests on the busiest thoroughfares around here. I was walking to work and noticed a young, probably just out of kittenhood cat also out and about exploring, as they do. Next thing I know a feathery menace from the sky was descending on that poor cat, who realized it was coming after her and immediately ran for it. Miss cat managed to get herself under a car to hide a second before the claws connected, but it was a very close thing. The crow landed on the car, satisfied, but then slowly turned its gaze on me, like the Eye of Sauron, and yup, I knew I was in trouble. Just protected my head and got out of there as fast as possible as the bird did a few passes at me as well. I didn’t bother using that route for a few days either.
Northern Goshawks will also attack if one gets too close. They are very large birds (largest Accipiter) and can do a lot of damage. Watch your cats and small dogs.
Canadian geese are considered the absolutely worst bird as far as attacks are concerned, but even a tiny bird can be scary when they are straffing your head with their claws.

Is is a good thing Lucy didn’t see Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds?

This brings back memories of a friend in NZ who told me how she went hiking in the bush and was kicked repeatedly by a weka!

If you’re a bird of prey, they probably will.

Linus is probably going to need a shin guard to protect himself from Woodstock!

Just pet him on the head, Linus. The hell with what Lucy would think.

The birds, namely Woodstock, must miss Linus petting birds on the tops of their heads.

I’ve heard of birds called buntings, but Woodstock is probably a punting! :D

Walked too close to some trees where some Mississippi kites were nesting. Received a scalp wound that required stitches.
