The dumbest opening line is “It was a dark and stormy night”

I agree with Barry, it’s dumb and cliche. And it makes no sense that a “smart” guy like Goat would be so critical, some of the greatest novels started silly. AND HOW THE &^%& IS THERE SUPPOSED TO BE CONTEXT AT THE VERY BEGINNING OF THE STORY!!! READ IT AND FIND OUT, YOU STUPID GOAT!!!By the way, he think Romeo and Juliet is a Romance! But Shakespeare didn’t write romances, it was a &&*^$#^ TRAGEDY!!

The opening line of Three Men in a Boat is “There were four of us.”

I would read a book that started with that line!

The opening line that I always viewed with one eye cocked was, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”. Pick one, but ONLY one!!!

Come on… there is a multitude of reasons why someone would use an opening line like that—comedic, weird, as a hook—and it may make sense when Rat adds context. Will it end up being a dumb opening line? Probably. But Goat doesn’t know that. And the bigger problem is that Goat is incredibly sensitive to harsh criticism about his writing (from the same guy he is criticizing in this strip, no less). Bad job by him today.
