Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for July 19, 2011

Transcript:
Pig: What are you doing, Rat? Rat: I'm advocating the overthrow of the government. Pig: They'll toss you in the pokey! Rat: They can't. I'm just a fictional cartoon character. They have absolutely no recourse whatsoever.
Oh, no! I missed that: the two burly dudes in sunglasses didn’t come for Rat but rather for his creator, cartoon-Pastis, the arch-fiend behind Rat’s plot! And he thought he’d actually get away with it. Look at his shocked expression as they hustle him off to an undisclosed location!
Reminds me of South Africa in the apartheid years. and, sad to say, not very different under the current regime; hope I am not carried off for this comment,.
Pastis: caught like a rat in a trap! A pig in a pokey! The DA thinks he’s the goat. He’d better duck before they toss him in the guardhouse. Even if the charges against him are a crock..What ever happened to free speech and freedom of the press? The government can’t be (quite) this blatant. . . .
You are like a modern day Samuel Adams. I’m just not sure if you are more like the revolutionary leader or just a guy who enjoys an occasional two or seven Sam Adams beers…
All the political commentors are missing the point – those men are from FamilyCircus & Blondie, Inc., and are just taking Pastis off for a little rehabilitation. [I miss thumbs up/down on comics.com; we were able to get rid of the political whackos by giving them thumbs down regardless of stripe.]
We’re never getting the thumbs back. Why would you want something that was so easily abused? Any 2-bit troll who wanted to stir something up only had to mark a few messages/comics down and all of a sudden the “mad TDer” was on the loose again. Leave it be. Though I think the government isn’t that petty, most of them are of the same age group who still find “Blondie’ and”Family Circus" funny. Pastis is doomed unless that rocket ship has an orbital laser.
Sing along with Sherlock: “He’s a rebel and he’ll never ever be any good… He’s a rebel ’cause he never ever does what he should…”

I love the way the last panel is drawn: The scene is centered on the desk instead of the people, so it really looks like SP is being “escorted” from the set. I haven’t seen any other comics do it that way.
Aw…thanks to those who enjoy my little mental aberrations….. and to those who provided some of their own. . I love comments from you guys too. Some great comments today.. and of course a few not so great, in that I see no need for us in this small community to be picking on each other, or starting political fights where none are intended. To that end, I’d love to see “thumbs up” implemented, but not “thumbs down.” We have a “Flag” capability that draws comments to the attention of mods; they can remove those they deem inappropriate or that bother too many people. It’s better than the comics.com system, which was so easily abused by trolls because three flags caused instant deletion, without any human oversight. And Cat and Ape, I often like your comments. I hate to see you being so critical, of my pal (well, on here anyway) the Mechanic and especially as the “like” function you point out has nothing to do with thumbs up for comments, it’s for “Liking” today’s strip on Facebook.
Love Pearls – To Susan Sunshine – I have enjoyed your comments on Pearls for the last year or more, Just want to let you know that I look forward to your comments. Keep thsm coming. I just reached 90 years old so I hope you are not insulted by my thinking you are some one I admire, Regards
As Goofy would say… well, gwarsh…. Thank you all again!
And@ Marie, I’m very flattered. No idea how such a thing could insult anyone, much less someone like me who has become accustomed over the years to a lot more eye rolling than praise for making silly remarks.
Well Rat, you arrogant little malcontent, now you went and did it. I’m gonna sic Larry and Bob on you. They can’t catch Zebra, they might have better luck with you.
Watch out Stephan. This is a government: Of the Lawyers, by the Lawyers, for the Lawyers and you (one of their own) have spoken against them. How do you say screwed, in Legalese?
LOVIN’ IT!… I believe at the end he may have credited a fan for the idea… Awesome… I got so shocked from the one panel where Rat says “let’s overthrow the government” to when they “arrested” Pastis… This is sooo reflective of the trials that have been on TV…
he did not just seriously say “pokey.”please Pastis. the FBI just want better word choice.-———————————————————————————————————————-although the word pokey does make me giggle.

Rat is only free when Stephan holds the pen, not when the pen holds Stephan.

Stephan, you must have written something that wasn’t PC. . . Now the ACLU have sent their goons after you!

Be care Powers-That-Be. Pig and LGD have the ‘High Ground’ in their orbital cardboard box.
x_Tech over 13 years ago
Yes, yes, I see Pig in this strip. Consider the strategic implications of that.

Good one, Susansunshine!Perhaps we’re looking at several days of “guest” artist work (Rat?) – shades of llittle Billy in Family Circus?
hariseldon59 over 13 years ago
At least they sent the FBI after him and not the Navy Seals.Maybe tomorrow’s strip will be drawn by a “guest cartoonist”.

I love this strip, it’s one of my favorites, but I do miss the TU feature of comics.com. Several TUs in my mind have been awarded to these comments.

If it wasn’t for the ACLU, the United States would be a Christian police state today. Which, unfortunately, is what 21st Century conservatives want.
