Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for August 07, 2012
Transcript:
Pastis: Hey, check it out, Rat... We're scrunching the strip vertically. Rat: What for? Pastis: It creates space above the strip for newspaper readers to write notes and stuff, that way maybe a husband and wife could communicate with each other in the morning without having to waste extra paper. Rat: What do the need to communicate about? Rat: Oh, that worked out well. Pastis: Hey! I thought it was clever! Honey, don't read this strip. It's not funny.

And if it weren’t for the magnifier, I wouldn’t have been able to get the joke. SOME of us don’t have the eyes that we had 20 or 30 years ago, Pastis!

HAH! you think somebody read this in newspaper!

Stephan PLEASE don’t give the Press Democrat any ideas about more ways they can scrunch the comics.
If they find out they can shrink them vertically and squeeze the two columns into one, they’ll do it.
In any event, there won’t be an empty white space for notes…. if the paper doesn’t cram another comic into it, Rat will sell it to advertisers.

Sadly, Susan is absolutely correct. White space has been a no-no since the demise of the NY Herald-Tribune, back at the early stage of the modern decline of newspapers. It simply would not be allowed in the shrivelled, way-downsized, money-losing, barely surviving paper press of today.Besides, Cartoon-Pastis, although the anonymous scribbler’s comment was incorrect, scrunched cartoons are too hard to read or to appreciate visually. Blow ’em up, big! Bigger!

Well, I thouight it was clever,,,and funny.

Funy thing is I’ve already seen newspapers that do this with other strips. You think at first it’s the way the strip is done, until you open another paper or go online and see the strip is supposed to be larger. Imagine the folks having to get out magnifying glasses after these papers shrink today’s strip.

Legaleagle and Hillbillyman — having worn glasses since second grade….. sigh….I never had “the eyes I used to have” in the first place…

So now one of the best moments of my day was nearly ruined by a stupid idea. Tiny print + aging eyes = morning headache. !@#$%^&!

I thought that GoComics was still having display issues. Good thing I have “zoom in” on my laptop.

I guess this the polar opposite of “thinking outside the box”…..

LOL! That worked!

The Seattle Times did this for Frank & Earnest. They figured it was a single panel strip, so who cares?
lancemay over 12 years ago
yeah, it’s not funny.
tbritt99 over 12 years ago
LOL. Brilliant.

I think there are two things that don’t work well together…lots of dialogue, and a vertically compressed comic. That said, I’ll be writing my own notes in today’s newspaper.

Oh be quiet, Rat.
That’s all I can say lately.

Stephan, if you’re going to show us a “funhouse mirror” image of yourself, you should really go for the “Olive Oyl” version, not the “walking hamburger” version.

Maybe that’s how Flattop got his flat top.

The dumb-ass Oregonian has shrunk so many comics you need a magnifying glass to read them. Or they chop off the headers and first panels (especially on Sundays). They save so much money on ink and paper that I cancelled my subscription. Idiots.
bmonk over 12 years ago
At least Stephan gave up smoking in this strip. Maybe there wasn’t room?
+++++
It does remind me of the Worms’ pad in “Men in Black II”

a cartoonist chronically starring himself in his strip. i’d troll this, but it’s just toooo lame.
COMIC-ER over 12 years ago
That’s the joke. That it’s thin. And why “injured”?

Two questions: (a) What’s a “newspaper”?(b) What does part (a) have to do with PBS?
kevindix about 12 years ago
I cannot believe no one remarked on the sad state of affairs where a husband and wife need paper to communicate with each other in the morning.
