Zebra: My idiot croc neighbor, Larry, is having his parents over next week. Goat: That beer-swiling beast has parents? Zebra: Yeah... Can you imagine the kind of neaderthal gathering that's gonna be. Larry's Father: And may I take along the complete works of Sir William Shakespeare? Larry's Mother: If, perforce, you must dear.

This explains a lot about Junior. Maybe their genes skip a generation.
Havelock_Vetinari about 12 years ago
On a side note, didn’t Larry’s mother once come in a strip and mock his hunting skills?
killacowinWA about 12 years ago
Larry just had some wayward friends screw him over. Zeeba Zeeba Eata, man. If you don’t have a moral foundation, college really screws you over.
margueritem about 12 years ago
Larry is adopted.

I bet Larry’s real name is Lawrence; he despises being called such whereas is friends and acquaintances call him… make that know him as Larry.

Pipe smoking croc…cool!
Sisyphos about 12 years ago
Got to love Ma and Pa Croc! So unlike Larry! He must be the black sheep of the family, so to speak.
Varnes about 12 years ago
Man, it looks cozy…..

Might want to take the book Chomp by Carl Hiaasen…….

Well… Dad does display a touch of Croc-ish ignorance or pretension by saying “Sir” Wm Shakespeare.
The apple may fall far from the tree but it’s still an apple.
I just realised…. Maybe Larry and Patty’s marriage was arranged!
She’d only met his parents, and never her intended husband.Yeah! That would explain her otherwise baffling choice to spend her life with him!
fredd13 about 12 years ago
Um. SIR William Shakespeare?!? Since when?
knight1192a about 12 years ago
This SOOOOOOO seems to explain Junior even better than just taking after his mom
Avatar_Ang about 12 years ago
Sophisticated hooligans.. :D
SwimsWithSharks about 12 years ago
Now we know where Larry gets his ridiculous tendencies. Couldn’t dad just bring his Kindle?
eddie6192 about 12 years ago
They seem rather civilized. I wonder how they’ll behave when they’re hungry, or see Zeeba neighba.

no. just no
johndifool about 12 years ago
This, kiddies, is a prime example of what novelists and clever comic-strip artists call “irony”.
rugeirn about 12 years ago
Pastis doesn’t mind when his ignorance shows. I mean, “Sir William Shakespeare,” and mis-using “perforce.” I suppose it makes him endearing, just as when a child mangles a phrase or mis-uses a word.
Simon Seamount about 12 years ago
Sir Shakespeare? Well, since he was the Earl of Oxford.

Well, this is The Comedy of Errors.

Maybe Larry was dropped on his head as a baby…or thrown across a room!!

This week’s strip should really be great!

Too much MTV for Larry. Should have said Empty-V which is what it was. Either that, or watching Keeping Up With the Kardashian’s. Wonder why we’re in a decline?
BurritoBandito about 12 years ago
Love the ironic plot twist. Predictable in a fun way.
bahramthered about 12 years ago
Why do I suddenly suspect Larry had an accident at some time in his past? Something involving lack of air or a blunt force trauma to the head?

I love the crocs. I’ve always loved the crocs, and now I know why. They got a classical education at home. They may have forsaken it, but they got it.
Sherlock Watson about 12 years ago
I just figured out the Larry’s Mom Paradox: The reason this crockette seems different from the one who was ashamed of her son’s non-predatory feeding habits (which involve Domino’s and Safeway) is that, just as there are many Bobs, there’s more than one Larry!
(If this was Marvel Comics, I’d get a No-Prize for this.)
Stream of conscience about 12 years ago
Larry could have a tragic accident a la Bob (perhaps ending up on Zeeba’s dinner table?) and Junior could go to live with the cultured carnivores.. Just thinking’.
DrewSnider about 12 years ago
Zebra’s description isn’t that far off: Shakespeare wasn’t knighted, so only a pretentious Neanderthal would call him “Sir”.
Number Three about 12 years ago
Love the Croc Parents!
Dad looks really smart.

SusanSunshine and fredd13 both beat me to it. Obviously, the Croc-o-Dad is a poseur, and is only affecting a knowledge of Shakespeare. If he had even a passing knowledge of the Bard and his works, he would know that he was a commoner, and not a “Sir.” Lesson: The croc is a crock.
Popeyesforearm about 12 years ago
Larry’s idea of a still life over the fireplace is a dead zeeba.
danketaz Premium Member about 12 years ago
If the crocs have their own country, why shouldn’t they have conferred a honorary knighthood ( however retroactive) upon Shakespeare. Anything to get the zeebas a little closer.
stanwal about 12 years ago
IT’S ALL A CROCK!! I bet nobody has used this before on here. LOL.
MommaMadeMe about 12 years ago
It would appear that croc intelligence … is not.
A.Ficionada about 12 years ago
They have their still life painting over the fireplace, where it will become sullied with soot and ash. Horrors! They are perchance cretins after all!
CrypticWizard about 12 years ago
I think Pastis knows very well that Shakespeare was never knighted, and only included that as partially a joke, and partially to see how many readers would point out the error.
knight1192a about 12 years ago
No he doesn’t.
