Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for November 14, 2012

Rat: I think I figured out how to unify this country. Goat: How? Rat: Well, one big chunk of the country likes the New York Times but hates Nascar. Another big chunk of the country loves Nascar but hates the New York Times. Goat: So? Rat: So let's put people who read 'The New York Times' on the track of the Daytona 500. Goat: I'm gonna face that way now. Rat: Hope they have quick reactions.

People who read the New York Times are on the political left, so Rat is on the right track.

@Alexikakos. No, they didn’t switch stools – they are just drawn on the other side of the counter.

We could also give Nascar lovers a New York Times and see if they can read it…hope they have quick reactions!

Sisyphos about 12 years ago
Interesting plan, Rat! I wonder if it would have the expected results (whatever those are)?
Hillbillyman about 12 years ago
I hate both of them. ‘Id rather watch paint dry than watch a Nasscar race. The NYT’s is a LIberal cesspool.

Being right doesn’t always mean you are right. Just remember it was recently proved that tea has less than a two year shelf life.

Well, it’s certainly the closest the NASCAR bunch will ever come to interacting with a newspaper.
emjaycee about 12 years ago
Ahem – some of us do like both the New York Times and NASCAR. New Hampshire Speedway, Pocono Raceway and Watkins Glen are located in NH, PA and (upstate) NY, so not all of the tracks are in the deep South.

Some of you are putting way too much effort into convincing Alxikakos of their error. Cast not your pearls before swine.
SDR1533 about 12 years ago
In case you haven’t noticed (probably not), there are several nascar drivers that can turn right and would do very well @The Ring.
luckydogsax about 12 years ago
Or, we could teach the people who love NASCAR to read.
Rickapolis about 12 years ago
Unfortunately NASCAR wastes time fining drivers for tweeting during a red flag stop, but doesn’t suspend drivers that deliberately cause accidents that cause serious injury. Go figure.

One would think there are gazillions of NYT readers on this site since they can’t read their comics in print.

NYT works fine in the bottom of a bird cage.

I think a Rat has taken over the country

Pastis wrote a comment in his last book explaining why he reverses the view sometimes. He says he does it when the there’s a switch in the order they speak. Here, in the first panels, Rat talks first, but in the last panel Goat does. He can’t make them switch seats, so he reverses the viewing angle.

I once had a wise civics teacher who said, “The poltical spectrum in this country is not a straight line, it’s closer to this [a circle with a small protion of the bottom open] because the extremists on both sides are just like each other, both justify breaking the law for their ideals and are willing to harm others to prove themselves correct.”

That would be so unlike NASCAR… Actually entertaining.
