Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson for July 10, 2016
Transcript:
Dad: Your book is just one book. Phoebe: Our e-reader thingies have lots of books. Mom: I still like how books smell, and I like turning pages. Marigold: "Books" indeed. You humans and your newfangled devices. Your modern contractions will never replace the crinkling sound and musty smell of unrolling an ancient scroll. Of course, the selection is limited...I am still waiting for The Corrections to come out on ancient scroll. Mom: Less talk, more read.

It will have to come put on new scroll, since ancient is a title that cannot apply to things when they first come out.

Ah, family togetherness by reading reading material (ancient or modern… or even post-modern).

A scroll may look formal, but it doesn’t beat turning pages… I feel weird to admit that I also like how a book smells… but when it is dusty.

I love this scene, it’s got that adorable ‘Kodak moment’ vibe – It really shows that Marigold is very much a member of the family now. And really, who wouldn’t want a unicorn in the family?

The best part about reading a scroll is that it’s too hard to jump chapters or skip to the end. You have to read it as the author intended.

I get the tactile and other sensory pleasures of books, but I’m coming around to e-books. Marigold may have a wait before the parchment edition of Jonathan Franzen. Then again, she is immortal even if publishers aren’t.

A year or two ago, I wanted to read Frank Herbert’s novel “Dune” again. It was in my local library system so I reserved a copy. When it arrived at my local branch, I found that it was a first edition. The paper used for the pages was so thick that when I turned a page, I thought two had gotten stuck together. It was a terrific experience, not just reading the book, but holding an object of such quality in my hands. Take that, e-readers.

Come on now. Why choose one or the other. Why not both? That’s what I do. I use e-books for most normal reading. Like any of the series I follow. I get paperbacks when I go to the stores, both new and used. They are most often unplanned. It catches my interest as I walk the shelves. And I get high quality hard covers for my favorites and other specials. I love that my office has 3 walls with book shelves.
But each to their own I guess.

One big advantage you get with books is that you don’t have to worry about the batteries dying suddenly.

I have switched to E-Books because of my eyes. The back lit screen makes it much easier to read.I still have LOTS of books in my library.Paperback and hardback.

And I find I use e-books for fiction, which I devour . . . but anything technical I need paper or I just won’t understand it.

I still go to book stores to “showroom” titles, then try to remember them to look for them later for free on Overdrive.

OK, while I’m at it….On Reading: My whole family are great readers. When I was in high school I was a hall monitor during lunch period. One day I was reading David Copperfield by Dickens, and one of the nuns bore down on me and scolded me for not studying. Today, I wouldn’t trade my knowledge of history, language, culture, or the language skills garnered from the masters I have read for any amount of the education that nun received.

I can’t say why, but this got me to thinking:
When is the last time you heard of banns for a proposed marriage being read or announced in a church?

there’s not some hip synagogue using tablets or e-readers instead?
