My in-laws live in a gated retirement community. I think the gated security cuts down on the access from the criminal and/or clueless population in the area, but is not a 100% system. Last time we went to visit, we flew down. What a mistake! Imagine 2 middle-aged adults, with 2 active teenaged boys stuck in a retirement center for almost a week. Talk about boring! We’re visiting them this year for Christmas, but we’re driving. Good excuse to spend less days being bored stiff, and won’t have to ask to borrow a car to leave the gated community. For my in-laws, it fits their lifestyle, and it is their choice. Except for my mother’s invalid years, my parents would have gone stir-crazy in one. (And my parents were older than my in-laws, so it isn’t just due to their ages.)
