Ours are strung on a thin metal line. We’ve seen them try to get to it, they can go a foot or so, but can’t keep their balance; the line moves too much. Between that and the cats that like to hang around under the tree and feeders, we don’t see many squirrels going for it any more.
The PESTs in this country are out of control….. where can you go to be free of them? Removing all plants from buildings and fences; !$%!$% all plants so they are not crowding each other and not dragging on the ground; not allowing fields to grow longer than 8 inches; removing all perculation ponds and processing sewage in closed containers…………are some of the ways to eliminate the out of control pest population in North America………

There *is* such a thing as a squirrel-proof bird feeder! We found one several years ago for my mother-in-law who was always aggravated at the squirrels for stealing her birds’ food.
It’s made of metal and can be hung on a pole or nailed to a fence. The birds can stand on the feeder’s little platform and get the seed because of how light they are. But if a squirrel tries to stand on it to get the seed, the little platform slides down (due to their heavier weight) and clamps the feeder’s seed opening shut and they can’t get the food.
She never had a problem again with squirrels stealing the bird seed (and neither have we since we inherited it after her passing 7 years ago).
We have another solution: Two Labrador retrievers. Squirrels will run along our back fence, but they won’t come down into our yard again for any reason.
I agree with ImaPlugger! Squirrels have to eat, too. Why should the birds be the only ones? I love to watch our little daredevils do all their tricks to get to the seed!

If that’s a cut-up two-liter bottle, the squirrels will just chew it up.
