Mailman: There's Poncho, and he appears to be pleasantly anticipating my arrival today. Maybe I've been all wrong about that dog. Poncho: Tell me everything you know about the alien conspiracy to take over regular citizens and turn them into slavering delivery automatons like you! Mailman: Why didn't I just become a coal miner like my father?

Why DID you become a mailman instead of a coal miner like your father?

I worked 3 days in my dad’s foundry, and that convinced me that I needed to go to college. So hot that you needed to wear thermal underwear to keep cool. So dirty you left looking like you were inappropriately dressed for a minstrel show. What a mistake college turned out to be since I couldn’t afford it and didn’t have the sense to know that at the time.

Good morning my friends. The mailman probably has a very good reason, but we will never know because Gilligan won’t tell us. @Boots at the Boar: college was expensive. I got a part time job and my dad helped me also. The part time job became a career after graduation. Have an awesome day everyone.

All the above applies to a person who is starting cold from the line. Of course, during college, one must also try to build connections with people from all over the country, and if they invite you to visit them in those parts, then you go and not only visit, but scout out the area for opportunities. This part is called building mentorships.
