Often works the same way with kids. One kid may ignore a particular toy for weeks or months, but if a sibling tries to play with it, you’ll hear “Gimme that, it’s MINE!”
I was playing with a friend’s 2 dogs, one of which seemed disinterested in the ball that I was holding up to the other pup, when, like a bolt of lightning, the “disinterested” dog snatched the ball out of my hand. I never even saw it happen… all I know is one second the ball was in my hand, and the next, it was in his mouth! (how he deftly managed to not take a few of my fingers along with it is beyond me!)

Worked exactly like this for the One Ring. (Hence Hudson’s line of dialog of course.)

So in other words, it’s pretty much “You can have this if you can pry it from my cold dead paws!”

Of course, this often leads into a mutually-satisfying game of Keep-Away.
“Throw the ball!”
“I would, but you have to drop it first.”
“Never! You have to try to take it away from me!”

I wonder if the little toy locomotive is a Hudson type? :-)

“The only way to get a good one is to take it from someone else.”
This applies in dating as well, which is why a wedding ring often ATTRACTS attention from the opposite sex.
